Transport Sustainability Triumphs in Times of Crisis
January 4, 2024
In the face of global crises, businesses often find themselves grappling with the immediate challenges of survival. However, a surprising trend has emerged in the transport industry, as revealed by a recent global survey conducted by the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. Despite the chaos brought about by crises like the pandemic and geopolitical conflicts, sustainability appears to thrive when supply chains are disrupted.
The survey on sustainability in the global supply chain spanned four years, encompassing crises such as the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as projections of recession. What stood out was the consistent trend observed during both the pandemic years and the aftermath of Russia’s invasion.
In the first year of the survey, when the freight industry faced the unprecedented challenge of the pandemic, respondents delivered unexpected results. Despite the upheaval and uncertainties, 80% of those who acknowledged an impact on their operations expressed an increased commitment to supply chain sustainability. This counterintuitive response raised eyebrows among the research team, prompting further investigation.
“The question is, what did the crisis do to firms’ commitment to supply chain sustainability?” says MIT researcher David Correll. “Of our survey respondents that said it had an impact, 80 percent said [sustainability] increased. At first, I thought that couldn’t be right.”
To validate the findings, the survey was repeated the following year, yielding strikingly similar results. Once again, 80% of respondents who felt the impact of the crisis reported an increase in their commitment to sustainability. Interviews with industry executives revealed a common thread: with supply chains disrupted, businesses were given a unique opportunity to redesign their processes with sustainability in mind.
Despite expectations to the contrary, sustainability efforts in some parts of the transport industry have grown during recent crises. Learn more about this fascinating trend in the latest episode of the Stay In Your Lane Podcast.
“When the supply chain is broken, sustainability actually flourishes,” Correll says. “When the supply network needs to be redesigned, I would bet on sustainability growing.”
In the third year, the survey delved into the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While not as unanimous as the COVID-19 years, a significant number of respondents, particularly in Europe, expressed an increased commitment to sustainability. Factors such as the need to comply with sanctions and redesign supply lines contributed to this unexpected trend.
In the final year of the survey, the focus shifted to how projections of economic recession affected firms’ commitment to supply chain sustainability. Interestingly, the trend reversed. A greater number of respondents indicated a reduction in their interest or commitment to sustainability in the face of economic challenges.
The results of this global survey paint a nuanced picture of sustainability in times of crisis. When supply chains are disrupted and businesses face the imperative to redesign and rebuild, sustainability takes center stage. The commitment to environmentally conscious practices grows stronger as companies seize the opportunity to optimize their operations.
However, when economic recession looms and businesses are forced to make tough choices for short-term survival, sustainability may take a backseat. The delicate balance between profitability and sustainability becomes more challenging, with some businesses prioritizing immediate financial concerns over long-term environmental goals.
The supply chain’s journey through years of crisis offers a valuable lesson – sustainability can thrive amidst disruption, but its resilience is tested when economic downturns demand tough choices. The MIT survey provides a unique perspective on how firms navigate the intricate relationship between crisis response, financial stability, and environmental commitment. As the industry evolves, these insights will help to shape the conversation around sustainable practices in the freight and logistics sector.
