A Balanced Approach to Tech Adoption in Transport

February 27, 2025

The transportation and logistics industry is undergoing rapid technological evolution. Everywhere you look, companies are discussing the latest advancements, particularly around APIs and automation. With increasing levels of affordability and accessibility of these technologies, it’s easier than ever to track, monitor, and optimize logistics processes. However, the key to success lies not just in adopting technology but in understanding how to integrate it effectively into a broader strategy.

“From a technology standpoint, it’s not so much a question of what technology to apply, but where does the company need to be to remain a viable competitor in the space,” says Paul Newbourne President of Logistics Project Consulting.

Technology is just one of many tools that drive efficiency in transport and logistics. To create a truly effective system, companies should consider five fundamental elements, beginning with people. The right people in the right roles are the foundation of any successful logistics operation. Technology can enhance their work, but it cannot replace their expertise and decision-making abilities.

Next, processes must be structured and disciplined processes ensure consistency in execution. Before implementing new technology, companies must assess and optimize their workflows. Tools like Transportation Management Systems (TMS), Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), and inventory management platforms should be leveraged to enable more efficient and accurate processes.

Measurement is also essential for tracking efficiency and effectiveness. Companies must use data to evaluate both process performance and business outcomes. But even the best systems need regular refinement. Organizations should always ask, “What can we do better?” to stay ahead of the competition.

Many companies make the mistake of prioritizing technology without first addressing their core processes. Implementing a new TMS, for example, without reassessing operational workflows can result in simply automating inefficiencies rather than resolving them. Instead of improving productivity, this approach often leads to complex, cumbersome systems that require further customization and maintenance.

“It’s imperative that companies look at where they want to be, what they have to do within their organization, what they can do to influence outside factors to plot a set of action points to get there,” says Newbourne. “Technology is part of that mix, but I would never focus on it exclusively.”

While technology accelerates decision-making and improves accuracy, it is not a cure-all. A delayed truck, for example, may be flagged by a tracking system, but it still requires human intervention to resolve the issue. Logistics professionals must blend data-driven insights with hands-on problem-solving to navigate the complexities of transportation.

Similarly, artificial intelligence (AI) holds significant promise for improving efficiency, but businesses should adopt it with caution. AI excels at automating routine tasks and analyzing vast amounts of data, but it is not yet capable of independent problem-solving on a human level. Companies should explore AI applications that enhance operations while recognizing its limitations.

As the logistics industry continues to evolve, companies must strike a balance between technological innovation and practical execution. The most successful organizations will be those that align technology investments with strategic objectives, optimize processes before automating them, use metrics to track efficiency and drive continuous improvement, and leverage technology to support, rather than replace, human expertise.

In an industry where speed, accuracy, and adaptability are crucial, technology is a powerful enabler—but it is only one piece of the puzzle.
