Tariffs and Trade Wars: The Future of Global Supply Chains
January 22, 2025
The global supply chain is a finely tuned machine, influenced by politics, economics, and market dynamics. While businesses aim for efficiency and resilience, these objectives often conflict, particularly in the context of geopolitical tensions and trade policies. Nowhere is this delicate balance clearer than in the U.S. marketplace, where intense competition drives companies to source globally, despite the challenges involved.
“Resiliency and competitiveness are often at odds—you can’t be incredibly resilient and incredibly competitive at the same time,” explains Michael De Clercq, CEO and Founder of CPG Sourcing. “To be resilient, you can manufacture everything you make in America. You’ll be safe, but you won’t sell much because your costs won’t be competitive.”
Trade policies in the U.S. are often shaped by political strategies, particularly during election seasons. Both major parties engage in discussions around tariffs and trade with China, often leveraging these topics for political advantage. While the possibility of increased tariffs exists under certain administrations, the reality is nuanced. Tariffs are as much a negotiation tool as a policy mechanism, aimed at influencing behavior rather than creating permanent barriers.
The U.S.-China trade relationship illustrates this dynamic. Despite geopolitical tensions, China’s manufacturing capacity and cost advantages remain unmatched for many industries. The potential for mutual benefit sustains this trade relationship, even as companies explore alternatives like nearshoring in Mexico or other regions.

Nearshoring has gained traction as businesses seek to reduce supply chain risks and increase resilience. Mexico, for example, presents opportunities due to its proximity to the U.S. and cost advantages. However, Mexico lacks the sophisticated supply chain infrastructure and expertise needed to compete with China in producing complex goods. Investments in manufacturing facilities and supply chain development could change this, but such transformations take time and significant resources.
U.S. businesses operate in one of the world’s most competitive markets, where customers demand high quality at low prices. This environment forces companies to balance the competing demands of cost efficiency and supply chain resilience. While reshoring production to the U.S. offers security, it often leads to higher costs, making products less competitive in the marketplace.
“The incredible competitive angle of the US market is compelling people to go far and wide to seek the best quality for the best price,” says De Clercq.
China’s dominance in global supply chains remains strong, driven by its ability to deliver high-quality goods at competitive prices. Despite cultural and logistical differences, the country’s infrastructure and manufacturing expertise continue to attract businesses. At the same time, geopolitical considerations, such as maintaining access to China’s vast consumer market, further complicate the picture.
For businesses navigating these complexities, adaptability is key. Supply chain decisions must account for geopolitical realities, economic trends, and the competitive demands of the U.S. market. Companies must play a strategic game, leveraging opportunities while mitigating risks.
“There are limits to what geopolitical influence can achieve,” says De Clercq. “As a player in those waters, you need to be conscious of these limitations and play the chess game accordingly.”
As the global landscape evolves, businesses that can strike the right balance between cost, quality, and resilience will be best positioned to thrive. The path forward may not be simple, but with careful planning and strategic foresight, success is still possible.
